Though I enjoy between three and five healthy meals a day, I moan whenever my appetite is not satisfied. Two decades ago, when facing long days with nothing to eat, I wouldn’t even mention my craving with a word.

Thankfully, Abba blessed me with gentle, caring people who recognised and attended to my unverbalised need. I’m particularly thankful for my friend, Magda, who arrived at my door on one of those hungry days with a plate of sandwiches and a wide smile. In the lightness of her act, she convinced me that her kindness was a way of charming me into friendship with her. In fact, she noted my need and made me an often guest at her family’s table.

If you give your bread to the hungry, and relief to the oppressed,
your light will rise in the darkness, and your shadows become like noon.

Isaiah 58:7-10

Last Sunday, at Ruah mass, we invited the congregation to commit to one act of kindness a day.
This Sunday, we extend the invitation to the entire Faith Community: Recognise the need in your environment you can attend to and do it with a smile.

Your light must shine in the sight of men, so that, seeing your good works, they may give the praise to your Father in heaven.
Matthew 5: 13-16
