The Liturgy of the Word – seeking volunteers

We want to say to the world, with humility and joy: Look to Christ! Come closer to him! Welcome his word that enlightens and consoles! Listen to his offer of love and become his one family: in the one Christ, we are one. This is the path to follow together…’ Pope Leo XIV, 18th May, 2025

The Liturgy of the Word is celebrated in Holy Rosary Church, Greystones, every Monday at 10am.  The Scripture readings of the day are the main focus of this liturgy, which does not include the Liturgy of the Eucharist or the distribution of the Eucharist.  It is, instead, a quiet time to listen, reflect and pray in the presence of Our Lord, allowing his word to settle in our minds and hearts and to guide our daily lives.

There is a small group of lay leaders of the Liturgy of the Word, trained in our Pastoral Area and commissioned by our Parish Priest to undertake this voluntary ministry.  Each liturgy follows a standard template; it may also include prayers which complement the readings,  reflect the saint’s feast or memorial which may occur on the same day,  and offer general intercessions acknowledging the concerns and needs of our world.  Each lay leader is accompanied by an experienced Reader rostered from the wider Group of lay Ministers of the Word.

We need more volunteers to lead the Liturgy of the Word.

‘There is a variety of gifts but always the same Spirit; there are all sorts of service to be done, but always to the same Lord; working in all sorts of different ways in different people, it is the same God who is working in all of them. The particular way in which the Spirit is given to each person is for a good purpose.’ 1 Corinthians 12:4-7

All of the baptised are called to active participation and to share in the ministry of Jesus Christ.  The Liturgy of the Word is a rewarding and enriching way of answering our baptismal call.  Can you consider volunteering for this ministry?  Could you give one hour, every month to six weeks, following a period of training and induction and with the support of the small group of lay leaders, to make this valuable contribution to the prayer life of our parish community?

Please contact the Parish Office for the attention of Róisín as chairperson of the Group.

Thank you.
