The most astonishing thing about the workshops with Tony is that he makes us sing some simple sounds like “va-va-va” or “da-mi-ne”, and before we know it, we find ourselves singing Mozart. No joke!

You’d have to see our faces when Tony handed us the music sheet for Mozart’s Ave Verum last Monday. We looked at one another, thinking our vocal teacher mistook us for his professional choirs.

“Are you serious?” – we asked in astonishment, thinking that a bunch of amateurs like us shouldn’t even consider singing such great music. We didn’t trust our voices, musical competence, or ability to comprehend classical tunes. Yet Tony’s great expertise made all the sounds simple and perceivable, and before we knew it, we sang the entire piece.

Singing Mozart together made us present to ourselves, to one another and to that untouchable, uncontainable energy that prompts us every week to gather, go beyond our limits and find a new song for our hearts.

Singing is like praying: we don’t need to be experts; we don’t need to be perfect. We only need to be.

So, come and gather with us on Monday at 7:30 p.m. in Holy Spirit Oratory and let us sing our hearts out.
