Shrove Tuesday

‘Shrove’ is the past tense of the old English word ‘Shrive’, which means to be absolved from sin by going to confession and doing penance. Christians were encouraged to go to confession to prepare for Lent.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)

Pancake Tuesday

In times past, during lent,  many Christians abstained from all forms of meat and animal products, including milk, eggs, butter, and cheese. Families made pancakes to use up eggs, milk butter and fat before the Lenten fast – a “last fling,” before the prayerful fasting and abstinence of Lent.

“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31)

Dear Lord,

We give thanks for the traditions we celebrate.

Today we feast.

We give thanks for your all your gifts.

May we be mindful of those who have much less.

As we celebrate help us prepare for Lent.

Amen.
